It's Getting Real!

by Elizabeth Lemuz

Me at the Texas Rangers Ballpark

Today I got to go on a tour around the Arlington and Fort Worth area visiting NBC 5 Studios, Six Flags Over Texas, Pavlov Agency, Ranch Radio, and the Texas Rangers Ballpark. It was a planned tour by the staff of the Dallas Area Alliance For Women In the Media Foundation.

I learned a lot from attending such amazing companies today. I didn’t really know what exactly to expect from the tour but I was very excited to attend. I was able to experience what the world of journalism is really like. I haven’t had much experience out in the journalism world until today. I learned more about broadcast journalism, marketing, PR, advertising, sales, and so much more.

We began our tour at NBC 5 Studios in Fort Worth, Texas. We got to hear from the VP of Telemundo 39, Kristi Nelson, and many more professionals in the NBC 5 news field. It was a privilege to hear great advice from them when it comes to applying for an internship or a job in the news world. I don’t plan on going into broadcast journalism, but it was definitely great to see and hear what all is going on during the day at their stations.

The second tour was at Six Flags in Arlington, Texas. This was an exciting one! We didn't get to ride any roller coasters, but we were able to learn more about what the park does to bring in customers and how to entertain them. It was cool to see what the behind-the-scenes looks like!

We also visited Pavlov, Ranch Radio, and The Texas Rangers Ballpark. These last three were a bit rushed just because we were on a schedule and we had all been asking so many questions on the previous tours. It was all a really great experience. Today only made me want to go out into the journalism world a lot sooner! It was interesting to see the world that has been described to me so many times before.

An Ethical Problem in PR & Advertising

by Elizabeth Lemuz

Public Relations and Advertising in my opinion are two exciting careers to work in. Professionals have the to opportunity to be creative and cater new ideas to the public. There is always something new to do and the job never gets boring. These careers can also get pretty complicated and make it hard to get the job done as well.

One of the most common ethical problem that is in advertising and PR would have to be how persuasion is seen as unethical because it is deceptive. The majority of people understand that advertising is supposed to give you an idea of what the product is like, but it the product isn’t going to be exactly what is seen on tv or on paper ads. One example is when you go to your favorite restaurant. You see a hamburger that looks appetizing on the menu, and once you get it, it looks nothing like what was on the menu.

There are of course, more serious examples than this, but this is something that I am always really not content with. As a consumer, I know that the item I order of the restaurant menu is not going to be exactly like what is pictured. This is just how advertising seems to work. I know that the products have to be advertised in a way that I won’t refuse it and will buy it.

In PR, the messages that the are given to the public aren’t always very transparent, and that causes problems. I believe as PR professionals, there is some information that needs to not be shared with the public in order to protect both parties, but it isn’t seen like this by the public all the time. Much of the things PR professionals do causes them more problems. At times, I believe the professionals are to blame, but then there are times they are just doing their job.

It all goes back to ethics. We have been discussing in class the importance of ethics so much that I don’t see why there would be a problem in the first place, but then again, I’m not out working with actual clients yet. I’m learning basics. I am glad I am learning the basics now before going out into the working field because this way I can help clients in the future.

Why is being ethical a problem in these two fields? Why is deceptive persuasion a specific problem? I found an article on the Institute for Public Relations discussing PR and ethics. One reason being ethical is a problem today according to this article is because, “Press agents were concerned with generating publicity at almost any cost” (Moyer). From the beginning PR has been in a bad light. I believe because we have all realized what trouble this has caused, we want to change the face of PR.

The Public Relations Society of America (PRSA) states that, “Public relations is a strategic communication process that builds mutually beneficial relationships between organizations and their publics”. It is the job of professionals to help both the public and the client. I believe in order to be ethical in any situation, the option that is best for both parties will be enough. There is already discussion about how PR situations aren’t very transparent, but there needs to be more transparency in order to please both parties.

Therefore, I believe that deceptive persuasion is a problem today in advertising and PR. It has caused problems that don’t need to be there and can be prevented, but it is still occurring.

Millennials Take the World

by Elizabeth Lemuz

marketing-strategy-300x200.jpg

What are millennials? I hear that word being thrown around all the time. I recently heard this word in class, and I hadn’t heard it as much as I have before. According to The Millennial Legacy, a millennial is described as the generation born between 1982 and sometime in the early 2000’s”. It is a generation title just like Generation X and Baby Boomers.

I believe that there is a lot of talk when it comes to how millennials are going into new job fields. We as millennials are bringing new creativity into the jobs that we are getting. I recently read an article from PR Daily titled "3 Ways to market like a millennial". I will not be analyzing the article as much as I will be discussing how it perceives us millennials. The title itself gives away enough as it is. We young people are apparently doing something right!

What I really like about this article is how it mentions that "millennials is a mindset, not an age demographic". Being a millennial, we have fresh new ideas that really attract our current generations and that is what companies want to do right now! Companies want to get our attention in order to advertise to us. Many believe that having younger people on their teams can get them to achieve this, and I do believe this. However, the article recommends that many can think like a millennial as well. The three tips given in this article are as follow:
  • Reinventing your brand's campaign.
  • Not waiting for perfection.
  • Creating consumer experiences.

When I first read about these three tips, the second one didn't make much sense. I think that millennials don't wait around for things to happen. We move on when something doesn't work out and try a new idea. I don't know exactly what older professionals do when it comes to thinking up new ideas, but I know that younger generations aren't too worried if the first time is a fail. This is sometimes seen as millennials being careless by older generations, but I think that's how other generations are going to see things. It's all about different ways of thinking.

I enjoy being categorized as a millennial because it may be seen as a negative thing sometimes, it’s also a good thing at times!

What is all the Yak about?

by Elizabeth Lemuz

PR Daily

I just recently read an article on PR Daily discussing an app called Yik Yak. I have heard students talk about this app and the concept behind it, but I personally have never used it. The article is discussing how this app may become the new “Facebook”. The app was introduced on November 2013 and the app’s popularity has been increasing since.

There are many apps that start off not being very popular and then become the next best thing within a few days. The article shares positive and negative sides to this app. One of the positive sides would be it is becoming a very popular app on college campuses. A negative aspect the article talks about is the increase in cyberbullying. Yik Yak allows anyone to post anything anonymously to this social web within a 10-mile radius. There is no profile picture or real name that is used in the app. Just like any other social media network, there are high risks. Anyone can be attacked on the Internet because there is too much leeway today. There are ways of tracing anything that is posted online, and I don’t think that because it is anonymous, it is any different. This new app can be dangerous if bullying is present, but it can also be prevented and stopped.

I don’t think that Yik Yak can become the new Facebook, like the article is stating. Yes, it is increasing in popularity, but anonymous posts on the Internet aren’t always a smart choice. It all comes down to being smart on the Internet. The audience that Yik Yak is attracting right now are college students. This age group tends to make wiser choices. College students still make mistakes, but they seem to be a little smarter about the Internet when compared to high school students.

In the article by TIME, there is insight from a 16-year-old and what life on Yik Yak at that age is really like. The student doesn’t necessarily like the app “but she says she can’t quit it because she feels like she’ll be missing out on conversations her friends and classmates are having. There is no need for high school kids to be on any type of social media, but it’s what these new generations do. Our world today is surrounded by technology and all its glory. Social media is what everyone is on and the new way of communicating. This is why actual face-to-face communication is becoming awkward.

Will Yik Yak become the new hot app everyone is on? That is for all of us to decide. When we decide to jump on the bandwagon and do as others, we help that topic increase in popularity. Look at what happened with #TheDress!
